Our History

The Professional and Managerial Association was established in 1982 following strong interest from professional and managerial staff across Western University.

The Association’s origins can be traced to a fact-finding survey distributed in 1980 to Professional and Managerial staff. A total of 420 surveys were completed, and 91.6 per cent of respondents indicated they would be interested in joining a Professional and Managerial Association.

Members identified several priorities that continue to shape PMA’s work today, including:

  • Professional identity and recognition
  • Management policy
  • Professional development
  • Salary and benefits
  • Other emerging issues affecting Professional and Managerial staff

In June 1981, PMA surveyed the 427 staff members eligible for membership and found strong interest in providing more structured opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

PMA officially launched in 1982 and established its first office in the Stevenson-Lawson Building. Marion Boyd served as the Association’s first administrative assistant.

Since then, PMA has remained dedicated to supporting its members, advancing their interests, and strengthening the professional experience of managers and professionals across Western.
